{"id":1073,"date":"2024-06-25T00:05:55","date_gmt":"2024-06-25T00:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/25\/family-sues-nasa-after-florida-home-is-hit-by-debris-from-space-station\/"},"modified":"2024-06-25T00:05:55","modified_gmt":"2024-06-25T00:05:55","slug":"family-sues-nasa-after-florida-home-is-hit-by-debris-from-space-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/25\/family-sues-nasa-after-florida-home-is-hit-by-debris-from-space-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Family sues NASA after Florida home is hit by debris from space station"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A family from Florida is suing NASA after their home was damaged by debris which fell to Earth from the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>Law firm Cranfill Sumner, acting for the family, said the case against <strong>the agency<\/strong> is the first of its kind \u2013 and will \u201cform the foundation\u201d for similar claims in the future as space debris had become a \u201creal and serious issue\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p>The object <strong>smashed into the home of Alejandro Otero in March<\/strong>, creating a hole in the roof and flooring.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Otero\u2019s son, Daniel, was at home at the time but was not injured.<\/p>\n<p>The family wants $80,000 (\u00a363,000) in compensation \u201cto account for the stress and impact that this event had on their lives\u201d, said the lawyers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>Cranfill Sumner said their clients were \u201cgrateful that no one sustained physical injuries\u201d but added the \u201cnear-miss situation\u201d could have been \u201ccatastrophic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the debris had hit a few feet in another direction, there could have been serious injury or a fatality,\u201d the firm said.<\/p>\n<p>NASA said the debris fell to earth after ground controllers used a robotic arm on the space station to release a cargo pallet containing \u201caging batteries\u201d in March 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hardware was expected to fully burn up during entry through Earth\u2019s atmosphere on 8 March 2024,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, a piece of hardware survived re-entry and impacted a home in Naples, Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NASA said the object was from a \u201cstanchion\u201d used in the flight support equipment to mount the batteries on the pallet.<\/p>\n<p>It weighed around 1.6lbs (725g) and measured 4ins by 1.6ins.<\/p>\n<p>The Otero family\u2019s lawyer, Mica Nguyen Worthy, said: \u201cSpace debris is a real and serious issue because of the increase in space traffic in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf NASA were to take the position that the Oteros\u2019 claims should be paid in full, it would send a strong signal to both other governments and private industries that such victims should be compensated regardless of fault.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on sky.com<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A family from Florida is suing NASA after their home was damaged by debris which&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":1074,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1073","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1073","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1073"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1073\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1074"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1073"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1073"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1073"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
