{"id":108,"date":"2024-05-15T00:03:28","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T00:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/15\/gchq-boss-says-chinas-genuine-cyber-threat-weakens-security-of-internet-for-all\/"},"modified":"2024-05-15T00:03:28","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T00:03:28","slug":"gchq-boss-says-chinas-genuine-cyber-threat-weakens-security-of-internet-for-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/15\/gchq-boss-says-chinas-genuine-cyber-threat-weakens-security-of-internet-for-all\/","title":{"rendered":"GCHQ boss says China\u2019s \u2018genuine\u2019 cyber threat \u2018weakens security of internet for all\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>GCHQ now \u201cdevotes more resource to China than any other single mission,\u201d according to the intelligence agency\u2019s director, Anne Keast-Butler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China<\/strong> poses an \u201cepoch-defining challenge\u201d to the UK, she said at CyberUK, the National <strong>Cyber Security<\/strong> Centre\u2019s conference in Birmingham.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p>Last week, Sky News discovered <strong>China had hacked the Ministry of Defence\u2019s payroll system <\/strong>and in March, Chinese hackers were accused of stealing data about UK voters from the Electoral Commission.<\/p>\n<p>After news about last week\u2019s attack, China\u2019s foreign ministry said it \u201cfirmly opposes and fights all forms of cyber attacks\u201d and \u201crejects the use of this issue politically to smear other countries\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, the UK\u2019s cyber security leaders are clear.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>\u201cChina is increasingly working with others to try and reshape the world,\u201d said Ms Keast-Butler.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough their coercive and destabilising actions, the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC) poses a significant risk to international norms and values,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to China is her \u201ctop priority\u201d, Ms Keast-Butler added.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cIn cyberspace, we believe that the PRC\u2019s irresponsible actions weaken the security of the internet for all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina has built an advanced set of cyber capabilities, and is taking advantage of a growing commercial ecosystem of hacking outfits and data brokers at its disposal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina poses a genuine and increasing cyber risk to the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The threat from China has changed over the last decade, according to Japan\u2019s deputy national security adviser Keiichi Ichikawa, who was also speaking at the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTraditionally, China conducted cyber attacks to steal technology, but now it is about cyber attacks against critical infrastructure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Chinese state-sponsored hacking group Volt Typhoon was caught hacking into US infrastructure projects. The White House\u2019s national cyber director Harry Coker said the attack marked a shift in tactics.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Coker said: \u201cThis was the first time we saw an entity position itself into our critical infrastructure with the clear intent to disrupt our ability to mobilise against [them].<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[China\u2019s] hackers are working on circumventing our defences and targeting our interests at an unprecedented scale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are doing this for one reason, to hold critical infrastructure at risk in a time of global competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a crisis or conflict scenario, China will wreak havoc on civilian critical infrastructure to deter US mobility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cyber threats around the UK are increasing dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>An average UK organisation experienced 788 weekly attacks in 2023, according to data from cyber security firm Check Point.<\/p>\n<p>As of early May, that number leapt to 1,078 weekly attacks for an average organisation.
