Bill Gates has said artificial intelligence (AI) will accelerate innovation and make it easier to combat climate change \u2013 but also warned it must be \u201cused by people with good intent\u201d.<\/p>\n

The philanthropist and Microsoft<\/strong> co-founder made the comments during an interview with Sky News at the Breakthrough Energy Summit in London.<\/p>\n

Gates<\/strong> told The World With Yalda Hakim <\/strong>that AI had so far \u201cplayed a fairly modest role\u201d in helping to combat climate change, but was going to make innovation \u201cfar easier to do\u201d.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cAI helps us model things in the sciences: understand materials better, and catalysts, and how to make proteins.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI, in every field of endeavour, will be accelerating innovation, whether that\u2019s in medicine or helping with tutoring, education.<\/p>\n

\u201c[With] climate [change], some of the complex things like modelling fusion energy \u2013 thank goodness AI<\/strong> is going to make that far easier to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if he was worried about suggestions that such technologies could be used to overthrow governments, Gates said he had \u201cnot heard that particular scenario\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAI is so important that we have to make sure it\u2019s mostly being used by people with good intent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that \u201canytime you have a new technology\u201d it is \u201cmostly used by teachers, doctors and scientists to help them be more effective,\u201d but said \u201cAI could be used by\u201d people engaged in cyber attacks or political interference.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you have to make sure the good guys are staying ahead in detecting and preventing that type of usage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u2018Penalties for fooling people\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gates went on to say there was nothing \u201cgigantic\u201d about AI, adding: \u201cMisinformation is there, but that\u2019s nothing to do with AI.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said we have to \u201canticipate\u201d that AI could be used in the making of fake videos, which he said should be marked as inauthentic.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause we know when something\u2019s printed on a piece of paper, anybody could have typed it, but we still think of videos as somehow authentic because it used to be hard to fake,\u201d he said, as he urged people to ask themselves: \u201cWhere did this come from?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019ll be laws creating penalties for fooling people,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

However, he remained optimistic for the future, adding: \u201cThe biggest thing is going to be advancing medical science, advancing education and taking this climate issue and getting that innovation to move even faster.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Wonderful technology\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pressed on whether AI could be used in cyber attacks on infrastructure such as hospitals<\/strong>, water or electricity, Gates said: \u201cThe defence has to be smarter than the offence. And both sides will use AI to up their game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if he was worried about the future of AI, he said it was a \u201cwonderful technology when it\u2019s used to help with teaching and health\u201d.<\/p>\n

Gates added: \u201cIt\u2019ll bring changes that will challenge governments to think: \u2018How do we step up?\u2019 And it\u2019s at a time where \u2013 do people trust government to step in and do those things? How agile will government[s] be?<\/p>\n

\u201cSo this dialogue where governments are starting to pay attention, that\u2019s very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
