{"id":1780,"date":"2024-07-19T12:06:10","date_gmt":"2024-07-19T12:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/19\/global-it-outage-hits-companies-around-the-as-planes-grounded-and-train-services-affected\/"},"modified":"2024-07-19T12:06:10","modified_gmt":"2024-07-19T12:06:10","slug":"global-it-outage-hits-companies-around-the-as-planes-grounded-and-train-services-affected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/07\/19\/global-it-outage-hits-companies-around-the-as-planes-grounded-and-train-services-affected\/","title":{"rendered":"Global IT outage hits companies around the as planes grounded and train services affected"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Businesses including banks, airlines, train companies, telecommunications companies, TV and radio broadcasters, and supermarkets have been affected by a mass global IT outage.<\/p>\n<p>Major US airlines including American Airlines, Delta Airlines and United Airlines have been grounded, while airports in Germany, Amsterdam and Spain are also reporting issues.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p>It is believed the outage is related to an issue at global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike and Microsoft \u2013 although it is unknown if it is the same issue affecting airports and train services across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>According to an alert sent by CrowdStrike to its clients, the company\u2019s falcon sensor software caused Microsoft Windows to crash and display a blue screen, which has begun to be referred to as the \u201cblue screen of death\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>CrowdStrike chief executive, George Kurtz, said in a statement on X that \u201cthe defect [was] found in a single content update for Windows hosts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed,\u201d Mr Kurtz said.<\/p>\n<p>The outage appears to be affecting Windows PCs globally, including Sky News in the UK which was not able to broadcast live TV first thing on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UK airports \u2018experiencing delays\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>London\u2019s biggest airport, Heathrow, said in a statement that its \u201cflights are operational though we are experiencing delays\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It said it was implementing contingency plans to minimise any impact on journeys and passengers are advised to check with their airline for the latest flight information.<\/p>\n<p>Gatwick Airport said \u201cpassengers may experience some delays\u201d due to the global outage \u2013 particularly when checking in and passing through security.<\/p>\n<p>Luton Airport also said it was aware of the global IT issue and is currently using manual systems to support operations.<\/p>\n<p>Ryanair, Europe\u2019s largest airline by passenger numbers, warned customers of potential disruptions which it said would affect \u201call airlines operating across the network,\u201d though it did not specify the nature of the disruptions.<\/p>\n<p>While passengers at Edinburgh Airport were unable to use automated boarding pass scanners and monitors at security displayed a message saying \u201cserver offline\u201d, according to a Reuters witness.<\/p>\n<p>The airport had reverted to checking boarding passes manually, the witness said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Beyond the control of GP surgeries\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The IT outage has also reached GP surgeries across the UK, which said they are unable to access patient records or book appointments.<\/p>\n<p>NHS England said the IT outage is \u201ccausing disruption in the majority of GP practices\u201d in England but there is currently no known impact on 999 or emergency services.<\/p>\n<p>Grimethorpe Surgery in Barnsley said it had no access to the clinical system, EMIS Web \u2013 which allows healthcare practitioners to view and contribute to a patient\u2019s healthcare records.<\/p>\n<p>The Wilmslow Health Centre in Cheshire wrote on X: \u201cAll practices in the UK using the NHS-commissioned GP computer system EMIS are currently without access to their IT systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is beyond the control of GP surgeries. Please bear with us until we have our IT systems back online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another surgery in Putney, southwest London, shows an error message online when patients attempt to book appointments.<\/p>\n<p>The Windrush Medical Practice in Witney, Oxfordshire, asked patients with \u201croutine concerns\u201d to wait until Monday after the booking system has been affected by the global outage.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police said it has not been affected, and everything seems to be working normally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Train cancellations likely<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also in the UK, Southern, Thameslink, Gatwick Express and Great Northern \u2013 all four of Govia Thameslink Railway\u2019s brands \u2013 said its services were experiencing widespread IT issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are unable to access driver diagrams at certain locations, leading to potential short-notice cancellations, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, other key systems, including our real-time customer information platforms, are also affected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>National Rail said its IT teams are \u201cactively investigating to determine the root cause of the problem\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Out-of-date prices at London Stock Exchange <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The London Stock Exchange is among the businesses that have been affected by the global outage, Sky News\u2019 business correspondent, Ian King, said.<\/p>\n<p>A statement posted on the exchange\u2019s website early said that a technical issue was being investigated with the publication of RNS \u2013 the exchange\u2019s Regulatory News Service \u2013 announcements.<\/p>\n<p>When trading began at 8am this morning, the exchange\u2019s website was still showing prices from the close on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The FTSE-100 opened 50 points lower \u2013 around 0.62% \u2013 at the open but no prices were available on the exchange\u2019s website, King said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more from Sky News:<br \/>\u2018Police presence\u2019 on streets of Leeds after mass riots<br \/>Trump\u2019s wife and eldest daughter make rare appearance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other major European stock indices have also opened to the downside this morning, with the DAX in Germany down by 0.55% half an hour into the session, while the CAC-40 in France and the MIB in Italy down by 0.45% apiece.<\/p>\n<p>Users on the subreddit for cyber security firm Crowdstrike reported issues in India, the United States and New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>While users in Australia began reporting issues early on Friday, stating they had been locked out of their workstations.<\/p>\n<p>Within hours, Australia\u2019s National Security Coordinator said it was aware of the large-scale technical outage affecting a number of companies and services across the country.<\/p>\n<p>It said there was currently no information to suggest the outage is a cyber security incident.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on sky.com<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Businesses including banks, airlines, train companies, telecommunications companies, TV and radio broadcasters, and supermarkets have&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":1781,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1780","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1780","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1780"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1780\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1781"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1780"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1780"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1780"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
