{"id":2808,"date":"2024-08-13T23:00:36","date_gmt":"2024-08-13T23:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/13\/general-motors-accused-of-selling-data-to-insurers-on-bad-habits-of-drivers\/"},"modified":"2024-08-13T23:00:36","modified_gmt":"2024-08-13T23:00:36","slug":"general-motors-accused-of-selling-data-to-insurers-on-bad-habits-of-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/13\/general-motors-accused-of-selling-data-to-insurers-on-bad-habits-of-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"General Motors accused of selling data to insurers on \u2018bad\u2019 habits of drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>General Motors is being accused of collecting data about the \u201cbad\u201d habits of drivers and selling it on to insurers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The state of <strong>Texas<\/strong> is suing the car company over the allegations, claiming it installed technology on more than 14 million vehicles to collect data about drivers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p>The lawsuit alleges GM \u2013 which manufactures brands including Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick \u2013 sold the data to insurers and other companies without drivers\u2019 consent.<\/p>\n<p>The data was allegedly used to create \u201cdriving scores\u201d to determine whether more than 1.8 million Texas drivers engaged in \u201cbad\u201d habits such as driving or braking too fast, steering too sharply into turns, not using seatbelts, and driving late at night.<\/p>\n<p>The data-collecting technology, collected by the company\u2019s OnStar diagnostics system, was allegedly installed on most GM vehicles starting with the 2015 model year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>It is not clear whether the data was used to increase insurance premiums.<\/p>\n<p>Texas attorney general Ken Paxton said the information had emerged during a probe into whether several carmakers collected and sold mass amounts of data without the knowledge of drivers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCompanies are using invasive technology to violate the rights of our citizens in unthinkable ways,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur investigation revealed that General Motors has engaged in egregious business practices that violated Texans\u2019 privacy and broke the law.
