{"id":3241,"date":"2024-08-22T19:00:31","date_gmt":"2024-08-22T19:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/22\/dont-sit-on-mpox-vaccines-and-keep-up-surveillance-whos-europe-chief-says\/"},"modified":"2024-08-22T19:00:31","modified_gmt":"2024-08-22T19:00:31","slug":"dont-sit-on-mpox-vaccines-and-keep-up-surveillance-whos-europe-chief-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/22\/dont-sit-on-mpox-vaccines-and-keep-up-surveillance-whos-europe-chief-says\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Don\u2019t sit\u2019 on mpox vaccines and keep up surveillance, WHO\u2019s Europe chief says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Surveillance and the sharing of mpox vaccines with Africa will be integral to preventing a global outbreak of the virus, the World Health Organization\u2019s Europe director has said.<\/p>\n<p>Mpox was <strong>declared a global emergency by the WHO<\/strong> last week, with a new strain spreading across Africa at an alarming rate and causing more than 571 deaths on the continent this year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p>Doctor Hans Kluge said while \u201cthere\u2019s no need to panic\u201d, people \u201calways need to be vigilant\u201d to ensure the world doesn\u2019t suffer from yet another global health emergency just years after it was brought to a standstill by COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe key message from me to the countries is surveillance,\u201d WHO\u2019s Europe director told Sky News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood surveillance, knowing what\u2019s happening because you never know how a virus may behave in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>Dr Kluge said he was \u201cworried for the African region\u201d and about cases spreading further, as more than 17,000 have already been recorded on the continent this year.<\/p>\n<p>He called on European countries to send vaccines to Africa and \u201cnot sit\u201d on them in order to prevent another global pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More on this story:<br \/>How does mpox spread and what is the risk to the world?<\/strong><br \/><strong>Man who contracted mpox describes \u2018horrendous\u2019 symptoms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the big test,\u201d he said. \u201cJust to see, did we as an international community learn from COVID-19 or not? Are we going to halt or to share the vaccines?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about measures such as airport screenings being introduced, Dr Kluge said people \u201cmay come easily into the country without any obvious symptoms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UK government\u2019s website, the incubation period for mpox is between five and 21 days.
