{"id":3441,"date":"2024-08-27T15:01:11","date_gmt":"2024-08-27T15:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/27\/bluetongue-virus-discovered-in-uk-after-rapid-increase-in-europe\/"},"modified":"2024-08-27T15:01:11","modified_gmt":"2024-08-27T15:01:11","slug":"bluetongue-virus-discovered-in-uk-after-rapid-increase-in-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/27\/bluetongue-virus-discovered-in-uk-after-rapid-increase-in-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Bluetongue virus discovered in UK after \u2018rapid increase\u2019 in Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A virus that affects sheep and cows has been detected in the UK after a \u201crapid increase\u201d across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Bluetongue \u2013 which is not dangerous to humans but can cause death in farm animals \u2013 has been found in a single sheep near Haddiscoe in South Norfolk.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p>It is believed to be the first case of the virus in the UK for the 2024\/2025 season.<\/p>\n<p>A 20km control zone has now been declared around the Norfolk premises in a bid to try and minimise the risk of further transmission.<\/p>\n<p>Back in May, the government said there was a <strong>\u201chigh probability\u201d<\/strong> of the introduction of a new strain of the virus \u2013 known as BTV-3 \u2013 as infected biting midges were blown over from northern Europe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>Officials said there has been a rapid increase in cases in the Netherlands and Germany, and new cases in France, Luxembourg and Denmark.<\/p>\n<p>The virus affects livestock including cattle and sheep, as well as goats, deer and llamas. Symptoms can include a blue and swollen tongue, fever, reduced milk yield, and, in the most severe cases, death.<\/p>\n<p>UK deputy chief veterinary officer Ele Brown said on Monday that farmers should check their animals frequently and report any suspicions to the Animal and Plant Health Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Free testing is available for animals moving from and to the highest risk counties.<\/p>\n<p>Bluetongue last swept through Britain in November 2023 after 199 cases were found in five months to March 2024.<\/p>\n<p>119 of these cases were found in cattle and seven cases in sheep.
