{"id":4169,"date":"2024-09-17T11:01:03","date_gmt":"2024-09-17T11:01:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/17\/amazon-tells-staff-to-get-back-to-the-office-five-days-a-week\/"},"modified":"2024-09-17T11:01:03","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T11:01:03","slug":"amazon-tells-staff-to-get-back-to-the-office-five-days-a-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/17\/amazon-tells-staff-to-get-back-to-the-office-five-days-a-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Amazon tells staff to get back to the office five days a week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon has told its office workers they may no longer work from home except in extenuating circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>It comes as Jonathan Reynolds, the UK\u2019s business secretary, said flexible working contributes to productivity, employee resilience, and staff retention.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p><strong>Money blog: Is now a good time to buy an iPhone?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Workers need to be judged on outcomes and \u201cnot a culture of presenteeism\u201d, Mr Reynolds told The Times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s Amazon doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>Amazon has described the policy change as returning to the way it worked before the COVID-19 pandemic \u2013 being in the office five days a week except for special circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>A letter from Amazon chief executive Andy Jassy said those situations included when staff or their children were sick, house emergencies, travelling for work or coding \u201cin a more isolated environment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Some staff who had been given exceptional permission to work remotely will remain able to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The changes will take effect on 2 January next year as Mr Jassy said the company understands staff have \u201cset up their personal lives in such a way that returning to the office consistently five days per week will require some adjustments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the change?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amazon believes being in the office is better for business.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back on five years of hybrid working from home (WFH) and in the office Mr Jassy said \u201cthe advantages of being together in the office are significant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Learning, working together, generating ideas and strengthening company culture is \u201csimpler and more effective\u201d in the office, while teaching is more seamless and teams are better connected, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf anything, the last 15 months we\u2019ve been back in the office at least three days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is WFH here to stay?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UK government, however, is attempting to facilitate remote work for more people.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s already trailed plans to extend the right to request remote and flexible working <strong>from the first day<\/strong> of employment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are real economic benefits to be had from the UK adopting this approach,\u201d Mr Reynolds told The Times, adding that remote working could also contribute to levelling up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe UK has very significant regional inequality.
