Google\u2019s new search feature that uses AI to answer some users\u2019 questions is facing criticism over its inaccurate responses, including telling users to eat rocks and mix pizza cheese with glue.<\/p>\n

AI Overview rolled out across the US last week and became available to some users in the UK last month.<\/p>\n

It is designed to make searching for information simpler but since the rollout, examples of erratic behaviour by the feature have flooded social media.<\/p>\n

In one example, the artificial intelligence (AI)<\/strong> appeared to tell users to mix glue with cheese to make it stick to pizza. It even gave specifics: \u201cYou can also add about \u215b cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to give it more tackiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

That recommendation appears to have come from a joke Reddit<\/strong> post 11 years ago and should not be followed. Eating glue is dangerous.<\/p>\n

Another response told users only 17 of the 42 US presidents were white. \u201cI\u2019m learning a lot about American history with Google\u2019s AI Overview,\u201d posted Bobby Allyn who spotted the blunder.<\/p>\n

AI Overview also claimed former US president Barack Obama<\/strong> is Muslim. While President Obama was in office, there were multiple untrue conspiracy theories that he secretly practised Islam despite being a Christian.<\/p>\n

Former spokesperson for President Obama Tommy Vietor posted the search result, saying sarcastically: \u201cGoogle\u2019s new AI overview search is off to a great start.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to the question \u201cwhat is the safe temperature for cooking chicken\u201d, one user posted a result appearing to show Google\u2019s answer as 38 degrees Celsius.<\/p>\n

The safe temperature is actually 73.9 degrees Celsius and the chicken should be this temperature all the way through. Any lower and you risk getting a number of dangerous illnesses.<\/p>\n

On the subject of things you shouldn\u2019t eat, AI Overview also recommended a user eat \u201cat least one small rock a day\u201d, according to X user Heshiebee.<\/p>\n

The response even cited \u201cUC Berkeley geologists\u201d as its source for the recommendation, saying rocks \u201ccontain vitamins and minerals that are important for digestive health\u201d. It does come with a warning, however, that eating rocks \u201ccan be dangerous\u201d.<\/p>\n

To be clear, you shouldn\u2019t eat rocks. Doing so could kill you.<\/p>\n

However, Google says these answers aren\u2019t representative of how the tool is working in general.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe examples we\u2019ve seen are generally very uncommon queries, and aren\u2019t representative of most people\u2019s experiences,\u201d said a Google spokesperson to Sky News.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe vast majority of AI Overviews provide high quality information, with links to dig deeper on the web. We conducted extensive testing before launching this new experience to ensure AI overviews meet our high bar for quality.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere there have been violations of our policies, we\u2019ve taken action \u2013 and we\u2019re also using these isolated examples as we continue to refine our systems overall.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
