{"id":480,"date":"2024-05-25T12:00:41","date_gmt":"2024-05-25T12:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/25\/smartphone-ban-for-under-16s-should-be-considered-group-of-mps-suggests\/"},"modified":"2024-05-25T12:00:41","modified_gmt":"2024-05-25T12:00:41","slug":"smartphone-ban-for-under-16s-should-be-considered-group-of-mps-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/05\/25\/smartphone-ban-for-under-16s-should-be-considered-group-of-mps-suggests\/","title":{"rendered":"Smartphone ban for under-16s should be considered, group of MPs suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A total ban on under-16s owning smartphones should be considered by the next government, according to a report from MPs.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Commons Education Committee also called for a statutory ban on mobile phones in schools.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p>It argued that screen time was harmful to children\u2019s mental and physical health, and both schools and parents needed clear guidance from the government on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the <strong>Department for Education issued guidance<\/strong>, which is non-statutory, instructing headteachers on how to ban the use of phones during lessons and break and lunch periods.<\/p>\n<p>However, the committee has said this does not go far enough.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>Its report said there had been a 52% increase in children\u2019s screen time between 2020 and 2022, with a quarter said to be using their devices in an addictive manner.<\/p>\n<p>MPs on the committee said that while the Online Safety Act will play a role in keeping children safe from online harms, full protection will not come until the Act is fully implemented in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Committee chairman Robin Walker said: \u201cWithout urgent action, more children will be put in harm\u2019s way.
