Betsy is a complete stranger and he hasn\u2019t heard of her until seconds before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I met you through the Cambridge Community Foundation, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiles, stands up to greet him and shakes his hand.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio made the demonstration to show how easily smart glasses can be used maliciously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre we ready for a world where our data is exposed at a glance?\u201d Mr Nguyen asked in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Nguyen, who studies human augmentation, and Mr Ardayfio, who studies physics, created the facial recognition glasses using tools that are readily available on the market.<\/p>\n<p>They used a pair of <strong>Meta\u2019s<\/strong> smart Ray Bans and streamed its live recordings to a computer, where AI was used to spot when the glasses were looking at a face.<\/p>\n<p>Using that first, live picture, the computer looked up more pictures of the person and then scoured voter registration databases and news articles.<\/p>\n<p>Using those publicly available sources, the two students were able to quickly discover people\u2019s names, phone numbers, home addresses and even relatives\u2019 names.<\/p>\n<p>In a video shared online, the experiment is repeated over and over, with Mr Nguyen and Mr Ardayfio testing it out on Harvard\u2019s campus to the shock of their fellow students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about John and Susan?\u201d they asked one woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are my parents\u2026\u201d she replied in horror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is meant to be a demonstration to raise awareness of what\u2019s possible today with consumer tech,\u201d said Mr Nguyen, adding the pair won\u2019t be releasing the code for how they built the programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too dangerous,\u201d Mr Nguyen told one of his followers.<\/p>\n<p>Meta told Sky News the Ray Bans do not come equipped with facial recognition technology and will also make a sound and show a light to indicate to others that the glasses are recording.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more from science and technology:<\/strong><br \/><strong>\u2018Most impressive comet of the year\u2019 set to burn across the night sky<\/strong><br \/><strong>Musk lashes out after \u2018summit snub\u2019<br \/>\u2018Mini-moon\u2019 about to enter Earth\u2019s orbit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sound and recording light cannot be disabled by the user, and if the light is completely covered, the user will be asked to remove obstacles before taking a photo or recording a video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what we can see, these students are simply using publicly-available facial recognition software on a computer that would work with photos taken on any camera, phone or recording device,\u201d said a Meta spokesperson.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<div>This post appeared first on sky.com<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two students have made a pair of smart glasses with facial recognition technology to discover&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":4806,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4805","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-tech-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4805","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4805"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4805\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/4806"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4805"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=4805"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=4805"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
