{"id":934,"date":"2024-06-15T00:02:11","date_gmt":"2024-06-15T00:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/15\/people-taking-weight-loss-drugs-to-get-beach-body-ready-risk-dangerous-consequences-senior-nhs-doctor-warns\/"},"modified":"2024-06-15T00:02:11","modified_gmt":"2024-06-15T00:02:11","slug":"people-taking-weight-loss-drugs-to-get-beach-body-ready-risk-dangerous-consequences-senior-nhs-doctor-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tradetrovex.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/15\/people-taking-weight-loss-drugs-to-get-beach-body-ready-risk-dangerous-consequences-senior-nhs-doctor-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"People taking weight loss drugs to get \u2018beach body ready\u2019 risk \u2018dangerous consequences\u2019, senior NHS doctor warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>People are risking \u201cdangerous consequences\u201d by using \u201cpowerful\u201d weight loss drugs to get \u201cbeach body ready\u201d, a senior NHS doctor has warned.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Stephen Powis, NHS England\u2019s national medical director, said he was concerned about medications such as <strong>Ozempic<\/strong> and Wegovy being used by people who are \u201cotherwise healthy\u201d and \u201cjust want to lose a few pounds\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">    <\/div>\n<p>Buying such drugs online can lead to \u201cside effects\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m worried about reports that people are misusing them \u2013 they are not intended as a quick fix for people trying to get \u2018beach body ready\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Doctors are seeing \u201cincreasing numbers\u201d of patients with \u201ccomplications\u201d from such drugs they have bought online, said Dr Vicky Price, president-elect of the Society for Acute Medicine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--teads\">        <\/div>\n<p>She added: \u201cWe are seeing serious, life-threatening complications, including inflammation of the pancreas gland and alterations in blood salt levels in these patients who were not aware of the risk they were taking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Concerns have been raised with authorities and there is a \u201cneed for urgent regulation and control of access for weight-loss drugs online\u201d, Dr Price went on.<\/p>\n<p>An A&amp;E doctor said a \u201cyoung girl\u201d arrived in their department with life-threatening symptoms after taking Wegovy bought online.<\/p>\n<p>The medic, speaking anonymously to the Chemist and Druggist news website, said the girl arrived in A&amp;E \u201cfeeling unwell, like she was going to pass out and couldn\u2019t stand up\u2026 she was really struggling to eat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The girl was \u201cnot at all\u201d overweight, the doctor added, but had obtained about a month\u2019s worth of the medication.<\/p>\n<p>She presented with \u201cstarvation ketoacidosis\u201d and needed \u201curgent treatment\u201d and \u201creally strong counselling on the potential side effects that include death\u201d, the doctor said.<\/p>\n<p>Starvation ketoacidosis is when ketones build up in the blood due to a lack of food.
